The JANE KAHAN GALLERY deals in unique ceramics by modern master arists including Picasso, Chagall and Leger. We were also one of the first galleries in America to specialize in the Picasso ceramic editions.
PICASSO CERAMICS
Picasso first visited the Madoura pottery in Vallauris in the South of France in 1946. He returned every year thereafter, making over 3,500 vases, plates, pitchers and other forms, hundreds of which were turned into edition pieces. Edition Picasso ceramics were made in multiples from 25 to 500. As they began to be collected prices rose. Today even the smallest Picasso edition ceramics command a premium and rare pieces can cost over $100,000 due to demand by museums and important collectors.
CERAMICS BY CHAGALL AND LEGER
Marc Chagall was another great artist who painted and sculpted on clay in Vallauris. Because none of his work was made into editions, Chagall ceramics are extremely rare. Fernand Leger, too, was very interested in ceramics and a handful of his designs were made into editions to support the creation of the Leger Museum in Biot, France.
The JANE KAHAN GALLERY maintains a large inventory of the top Picasso pieces and, given our large data base, are often able to locate specific ceramics for collectors and institutions. We also handle the rare Chagall and Leger unique ceramics, as well as Leger editions.
Buying art long distance -- whether by mail, over the phone or through the Internet -- is problematic. The JANE KAHAN GALLERY does not quote prices except with established clients, nor can we provide informal estimates of pieces that you may own (though we do perform written Ceramic Appraisals for a fee). Our function is to help our clients acquire the works of art that best suit their tastes and pocketbooks. That is why we seek a direct relationship that will better help us to understand their needs.
