FINE PRINTS AT JANE KAHAN GALLERY

As a member of the International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA) since its inception, the JANE KAHAN GALLERY has always offered an outstanding collection of museum-quality prints of all techniques, including lithographs, etchings, linoleum cuts, etc.  We handle a wide range of graphic work by 19th and 20th century European and American modern masters with a particular expertise in the prints of CHAGALL, PICASSO and MIRO.  We are members of the Appraisers Association of America and perform Certified Appraisals for a fee.

A serious dealer's most important job is to help educate its clientele about art.  Prints are a complex subject and even experienced collectors sometimes find it difficult to understand the standards of value, the pitfalls and the opportunities in the works of various artists.   The IFPDA has made available an informative essay entitled "What Is A Print?" that every new collector should take as a starting point, but every artist who has worked in these media and each print that has made its way into the marketplace presents a different history, context and challenge.  An in-depth study of subject could easily fill several lifetimes.

Fine art prints are not reproductions of paintings but "multiple originals" created by the artist.  There are many prints that are extremely valuable even though they were not signed.   There are also numerous reproductions, altered prints and outright forgeries.   Condition is a paramount concern when it comes to prints, but not the only consideration of value.  Unless a collector is thoroughly knowledgeable about this complex market, he would do well to pursue purchases through a respected art dealer whose field of expertise includes fine prints.
